While nothing beats down for warmth for weight and for compressibility there is a place in our damp climate for a thick, warm synthetic jacket without any worries about getting it wet. The Torres Jacket is one such jacket and the best I’ve tried in several years. Compared with down it is quite heavy and bulky but that’s the case with any synthetic jacket this warm. Whilst not 100% waterproof it’s pretty rainresistant and stays warm even when damp. Drying time is fast too. The insulation is Paramo’s own and is water-resistant, soft and flexible. The Torres is a well-designed, functional jacket. It’s crotch-length with a partly elasticated hem to prevent heat loss. There’s an insulated baffle inside the main zip that is folded over to act as a chin guard at the neck. The hand warmer pockets have insulation on both sides and are very roomy. The inside pocket is big too and ideal for drying damp gloves. It will take a map. The adjustable hood is warm and comfortable and will fit over a waterproof jacket hood. Indeed, the overall sizing of the Torres is generous as it’s designed to be worn over other garments, a concept Páramo calls “over-layering”. To this end the lining has a shiny smooth finish that slips easily over other fabrics, making it easy to don the Torres.

I wore the Torres quite a few times last winter and spring on wet days, sometimes with temperatures around freezing and wet snow falling. It always kept me warm whilst stationary. If you want the warmth of a down jacket without having to bother about getting it wet then the Torres is a good choice.
