  • Hanwag Boots now in stock…

We are very pleased to launch a new brand to our shop – Hanwag.

HANWAG is called after its founder Hans Wagner. At the company’s headquarters in Vierkirchen near Munich, it has been making top-quality alpine and trekking footwear since 1921. “Traditional craftsmanship, combined with sophisticated technical expertise, constant innovation and a passion for what we do are the cornerstones of our wide-ranging collection.”

We share an ethos of the importance of a properly fitted boot and matching your foot to the correct last. At the factory a boot or shoe is given its own, specific form, this is defined by the last. A last is a model rather like an artificial foot. It’s made either from a solid piece of wood or plastic and the footwear’s fashioned around it. If the lasts used don’t correspond to your own foot shape, the footwear will never fit properly and hours and hours of painful hiking won’t make any difference.

We are very impressed with quality of the materials and manufacture, we are really pleased with their fit so far and look forward to trying them on your feet…

  • Custom Boot Fitting

Not only do we have a fantastic selection of walking boots in 5 different widths and a multi-award winning Specialist Boot Fitting Service but we can personalise the fit of all our walking boots by gently steaming and stretching the footwear to improve the comfort even more!

This option is open to all customers purchasing footwear from us and is completely free!

"Our customers are always surprised at what a difference stretching can make to the feel of a boot- it takes a boot from feeling good, to great!"

Customising the fit of the footwear in this way is great for relieving any small pressure points.

We do not customise ill fitting footwear as a shortcut to a slightly better fit, we only customise footwear that is already feeling good but just needs a little extra adjustment and personlisation for optimum comfort.

Stretching walking boots is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from bunions. We carefully create a little “pocket” for the bunion to sit in comfortably, free from pressure and discomfort.

Personalising your boots is done in store, whilst you wait, and only takes about 10 minutes.

The combination of getting a boot that matches your foot shape plus stretching, means you get a personalised boot which offers amazing comfort without the cost (or waiting list) of a fully custom boot.

We are delighted to be nominated for ‘Independent Retailer of the Year’ at the The Great Outdoors Awards 2015.

You can vote for your favourite products, people and services that contribute to your enjoyment of the hills and mountains online and if you think we deserve it, maybe you could help us to reach the final 😉

  • Exploring Whalley

Whalley, The Ribble Valley & The Forest of Bowland

Situated in the stunning Ribble Valley, Whalley has a lot to offer. You can go back in history by visiting the ruins of Whalley Abbey or the Medieval Church, or take in Nature walking along the River Calder or on Whalley Nab.

Going slightly further afield you will find the beautiful Pendle Hill where you will discover stunning views of the Ribble Valley and the rest of Lancashire from its height of 1,835 feet.

The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and should not be missed. With 803 square kilometres of rural land in the counties of Lancashire (730 sq km) and Yorkshire (73 sq km), it offers some of the most beautiful and remote walking in the country.

The Ribble Valley is emerging as one of the country’s premier food destinations perfect for whetting your appetite after a beautiful walk. If good hearty food, warm hospitality and exceptional value are things you look for in a place to eat, then you are spoilt for choice with the many award winning traditional country inns on the Ribble Valley Food Trail.

  • Birdwatching and Paramo

Paramo has developed a ‘directional’ waterproof and breathable system using fabrics that repel water and pass internal moisture outwards by directing the water away from the body. The company claims the garments can move up to 80% of internal moisture away from the body. THE SOFT, QUIET FABRICS OFFER REAL COMFORT AS WELL AS EXTREME WEATHERPROOFING.

In recent tests by the Consumers Association, Paramo’s directional system out-performed all other waterproofs tested and, like me, the CA thinks it’s the best waterproof out there.

The Cascada jacket (£180) has a good length, scooped tail giving full back warmth and allows full shoulder and arm movement. the shoulders are double-lined for extra comfort. The adjustable Velcro, elasticated cuffs open to a huge width to all for ventilation/cooling.

The hood has a wired peak and volume adjustment and rolls-away into the collar. Waist and hem have elasticated drawcords. Two zipped hand-warmer pockets on the hips.

Paramo’s choice of shirts and pull-on tops are a class apart. The Trail Shirt (£50), Mountain Pull-on (£55) and Mountain Vent Pull-on (£70; includes zipped armpit vents) are all made of the same reversible high-wicking fabric. On hot days you can wear the smooth, silky side derect against the skin and on colder days, switch it to the fleecy side in.

The Cascada trousers (£100) can be worn next to the skin or, in extreme cold, over other trousers. The sides of the trousers have three-quarter-length, two-way zips and can be opened during use to allow maximum ventilation/cooling while the leg shape is maintained by the series of poppers.

The curved and articulated knees allow maximum movement and minimum drag and the width of the ankle can be adjusted with poppers. They are supremely light, soft and comfortable with elasticated drawcord and belt-looped waist. the seat is double layered for extra comfort when sitting. Two zipped hip pockets.
