Whalley Warm & Dry recommend Nikwax aftercare products which are easy and safe to use.
Nikwax aftercare products are environmentally friendly, water-based, non-hazardous, non-solvent and fluorocarbon free.
The waterproof performance of your Páramo can be maintained indefinitely by regular cleaning and periodic reapplication of Nikwax aftercare products.
Regular cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash® is absolutely essential for optimum performance and comfort. Regular cleaning will not damage the garment, it revitalises the water repellency.
Tech Wash® has been specifically designed and optimised for breathable waterproof fabrics. It is a wash-in, non-detergent, biodegradable liquid soap.
It is very important not to use conventional washing powder or liquid detergents when cleaning your Páramo. Conventional washing powder and liquid detergents destroy the water-repellent finishes on waterproof garments. If these detergents have been used, garments will require cleaning with Nikwax Tech Wash and reproofing with Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In.
You can apply Nikwax Tech Wash® to your Páramo using your washing machine;
Application in a washing machine is quick easy, and ensures that the whole garment is thoroughly cleaned.
We advise washing with Nikwax Tech Wash® every 2-4 weeks
of regular wear.
Even if the outside of the garment appears to be clean, the inside layer of fabric (the pump liner) needs to be regularly cleaned in order for it to effectively push liquid moisture away from the body keeping you dry from precipitation, perspiration and condensation. If not regularly cleaned the pump liner can get clogged with salt crystals from your perspiration .
Rapid wetting of the outer fabric in rain (i.e. water absorbed by the fabric) is a sure sign the water-repellency is fading and washing is required.
After washing you can check the water repellency by placing the jacket under running water, the water should run off in beads (as pictured below), if the water isn’t beading you should wash your jacket in Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In – please see here for how to do this.
It is important not to use Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In every time you clean your Páramo with Nikwax Tech Wash® – please see here for reasons why.
Stains such as food, mud or watermarks can be easily removed with undiluted Nikwax Tech Wash® or any household detergent (washing-up liquid). We recommend using a sponge, or soft nylon brush, to apply undiluted Nikwax Tech Wash® to the stubborn stains before washing.
More stubborn oil or grease stains may require dry cleaning to remove them.
If detergents or dry cleaning are used, the garment will require washing with Nikwax Tech Wash® followed by re-proofing with Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In
Re-proofing with Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In reduces the water-absorbency of outer fabrics, minimising weight gain, heat loss and optimising breathability. It keeps you drier and safer.
Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In is easy to use in a washing machine;
Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In is a water-based product which soaks in exactly where needed; no missed areas or over application problems. Every fibre is coated with water repellency, ensuring that no areas are missed.
No. You must not re-proof your garments every time you wash them. If after washing with Nikwax Tech Wash®, water runs off the jacket in beads (as shown in the image above), then there is no need to re-proof.
If you proof your Páramo waterproof or water-repellent garment too much it can actually be detrimental to the performance. If the garment is overproofed it can cause a build-up of excess Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In polymers (like an invisible residue) on the surface of the fabric which will prevent the garment from being breathable and waterproof.
Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In has been proven to last at least 30 washes if proofed properly.
We recommend garments should be re-proofed with Nikwax TX.Direct® Wash-In every 9-12 months, or when washing with Nikwax Tech Wash® fails to restore the water-repellency – you can check the water-repellency by running water over part of the garment, the water should run off in beads.
If you proof your Páramo waterproof or water-repellent garment too much it can actually be detrimental to the performance. If you believe you may have overproofed your Páramo waterproof or water-repellent garment, we recommend calling Páramo (01892 786400) to arrange returning the garment for professional cleaning.
If you are unable to return your Páramo garment to Páramo for professional cleaning, you can try to remove the excess TX.Direct® yourself, at your own discretion.
All the Parameta fabrics, from which Paramo base layers are constructed, can be laundered with a normal non-biological detergent on a 40 degree synthetic cycle in a washing machine or hand washed in warm water.
We recommend Nikwax BaseWash® for all Parameta fabrics – it has been especially formulated for performance fabrics and is an environmentally-friendly, water-based, non-persistent product that’s easy and safe to use.
Using Nikwax BaseWash® enhances your Paramo base layer’s wicking performance, helping the fabric to absorb and spread every drop of perspiration more efficiently in order to dry quickly, this helps to keep you warmer in cold weather. When the weather conditions are warm and/or humid, all cambia “directional” base layers should be reversed so that you can benefit from their cooling effect (black hem label against the skin to stay warm and dry, white hem label against the skin to stay cool). Washing the garments regularly also inhibits the build-up of body odour and refreshes the fabric, prolonging the effective life of your base layer.
We recommend that you do not use either fabric conditioners or waterproofing products on Parameta fabrics as this will affect their wicking performance.
Garments can be dried naturally or tumble-dried on a cool setting.
