Altberg A-Forme Last
To ensure you have comfortable feet when walking, it is essential to match your foot shape with the shape of the walking boot. The Altberg A-Forme Last® has been specially developed for an ‘asymmetric’ foot shape.
The bootmakers at Altberg identified a foot shape that had different characteristics to the most common type of foot shape covered by their ‘5 width fitting’ lasts. They called this foot ‘the asymmetric foot’ and it is categorised by the following 4 key features:
1. The inside heel to the large toe is in more of a straight line on an asymmetric foot
Unfortunately standard boot shapes push the large toe sideways (inwards) as a result of not matching the foot shape correctly.
2. The asymmetric foot has a narrower heel and mid-foot
If you have an asymmetric foot and you do not have the correct shaped boot, it can cause the heel and instep to move more than the average foot when laced securely.
3. The forefoot is wider and shallower on an asymmetric foot
Standard boot shapes have too much room above the flex area and too much pressure at the sides of the forefoot for an asymmetric foot.
4. The instep is further back
The asymmetric foot has a tendency to slip forward more than average in standard boots.
Features of the Altberg A-Forme Last
In line with the identified 4 features of the ‘asymmetric foot’, a new last was developed. This new asymmetric last, known as the A-Forme® last, has the following 10 key features;
1. Toe shape
Running shoe shape at the front reduces sideways (inwards) pressure on the large toe.
2. Increased width across the forefoot (without significant increase in volume)
This allows the foot to sit in it’s natural shape/alignment with less constraint on this part of the foot. Careful consideration to the depth of the last has been made to ensure there is not too much space where the boot flexes.
3. Narrower shape and reduced volume near the instep
This increases resistance to sideways movement of the instep.
4. Narrower heel
The narrower heel limits sideways movement and rotation.
5. Toe roll
Shepherds boot increases toe lift so boot rolls and flexes less when walking
6. Instep moved backwards
This helps to hold the foot at the back, in the heel cup, when correctly laced.
7. More rounded shape at the heel
This helps to hold the heel more securely.
8. Curved profile on both sides
This helps to hold the heel in it’s neutral central position.
9. Narrow at the top of the heel
This helps to resist the heel lifting.
10. Heel base slightly wider
The low profile allows you to insert supportive insoles.
